LA – Basic Principles of Layout (week9&10)

The thirst task for these weeks was to chose a magazine, newspaper or a book including both text and image. I found a Monocle magazine, and placed tracing paper over the top of it’s the three spreads. Then I traced the grids on the page layouts, and wrote down the column widths, and margin sizes at the top, bottom, and to the left and right.

The first spread that I copied was only using three columns but soon I realized that actually the hole magazine is using 9 columns which gives a lot of flexibility for using the text, pictures, Illustrators and graphics. The articles have lots of little pictures but it doesn’t look messy or unorganized. The pictures could be used even over the back. The text is in four, three or two columns.

What is changing in different pages is that there is an information bar (in red) – telling this story is about survey – in the bottom of some of the pages placed together with page and issue numbers to the master grid. The same pages have 0,5cm decoration borders in the margins on the top, bottom and left or right edges.
