The fourth task was to compare the design (in terms of pace and contrast) of an online magazine, blog or website to that of a printed magazine, book or journal.
I chose www.elle.com as an online magazine. In this online magazine the pace is varied by creating contrast using different size pictures and text, different positioning of the images, Illustrated pictures, quotes, different rhythm in columns (1-5 columns), white space and black and cray lines. What captured my eye imidiately was the illustrated characters in the opening page, the use of typefaces and the use of different rhythm in the different size pictures. Elle’s online magazine is using motion pictures to create interest but just a little. It’s a nice combination of elegant webpage and interesting to read. I was a bit expecting something more interesting and unique from a such a well known magazine.
To compared to the Monocle magazine Elle online magazine had more columns (20 columns) and the banner broke that rule being even more wider. The different articles are strongly divided vertically. When you enter the articles the text is only in one column.
